LayerView: Frequently Asked Questions.
Does LayerView support 64-bit systems?
Yes. Since version 1.10.1003, LayerView has supported 64-bit installations. This includes Windows Vista x64, Windows 7 x64 and Windows Server 2008 x64. Windows XP Professional x64 Edition is not supported.Which network adapters does LayerView support?
LayerView supports almost every Ethernet and Wireless adapter. If you find an adapter that it does not support, we would love to hear from you and we will strive to add support for it. Please contact us.LayerView doesn't currently support some modems or 3G (mobile Internet) cards. We are looking at adding support for these in the future. If this would help you, please tell us!
I get a message saying that the LayerView driver installation failed, or that the driver could not be found. What should I do?
First, just try closing LayerView and re-opening it. This will trigger the driver installation again. If this fails, try rebooting your system. This sounds un-technical but in our experience it really does solve problems where for example the driver has been half-installed.
If this fails, try following the steps below to manually uninstall and reinstall the driver.
If you are still having problems please contact us - we will help!
LayerView does not collect any packets at all. What could be wrong?
Firstly please confirm that you have selected the correct network adapter to monitor. If so, try turning off Promiscuous Mode in the application preferences (open the Tools menu and select Preferences...), and restart the trace. Not all network adapters can support promiscuous mode - in particular most wireless adapters do not support it.If this still doesn't help, contact us.
How do I manually uninstall and reinstall the driver?
Begin by closing all LayerView windows. Then, open a command prompt window. In Windows Vista and Windows 7, you can do this by clicking Start / All Programs / Accessories / Command Prompt. In prior versions of Windows, click Start / Run, type 'cmd' and press Enter.
In the command prompt window, change to your install directory. For example if you installed to C:\Program Files\LayerView, type CD \Program Files\LayerView. Press Enter.
The next steps depend on whether you are using a 32-bit or 64-bit operating system. To determine what you are using, see how to determine your operating system type below.
32-bit users
- To uninstall the driver, type layerviewinstall -uninstall and press
Enter. You should get a message indicating success or failure. If you are going to
reinstall the driver, it's OK for this to fail.
- To reinstall the driver, type layerviewinstall and press Enter. Again you should get a message indicating success or failure. If this fails, please contact us.
64-bit users

Enter. You should get a message indicating success or failure. If you are going to
reinstall the driver, it's OK for this to fail.
